Now here's something that needs a little explanation: Rumiko Takahashi is best known for her comedic series, but she also has drawn a vast collection of short stories. Fire Tripper was one of the first three released as an OAV mini-series, affectionately called Rumic World (and the name has stuck to include all the rest of the short stories), back in the '80s. Surprisingly for a female manga artist (although not so much these days, as others like Ogre Slayer by Kei Kusunoki came out), Miss Takahashi often draws the bloody and the gory; Fire Tripper is certainly one of them, as the main character, Suzuko, slips back to the past into feudal Japan. What is it that causes the mysterious phenomena? Fire, with its mesmerizing intensity, beckons to Suzuko. Perhaps it has a purpose to it, as it completes its circle of time. Fate and destiny comes around in a full circle as well -- Suzuko, who tries to protect her friend Shu, the little boy in the neighborhood, is in turn protected by Shukumaru, the savage warrior of the past. Miss Takahashi again weaves a tale of "love conquers all" in a fantastic adventure. |
