Anime Series

These are a few of my favorite anime series, besides Five Star Stories (not an anime series) and Urusei Yatsura (not one of my favorites), along with a brief description/critique for each. Click on the titles to access their homepages, and click on the images to browse through their picture archives.

Ah! My Goddess
Kosuke Fujishima
A "heavenly" romantic comedy in which Keiichi Morisato's life is forever changed when he accidentally dials up the Relief Goddess Office, summoning the goddess Belldandy. She grants him one wish, which she misinterprets into meaning that he wants her to stay with him forever.
Bubblegum Crisis
Toshimichi Suzuki
Set in 2032/2033 MegaTokyo, the vigilante Knight Sabers (Sylia Stingray, Priss S. Asagiri, Linna Yamazaki, and Nene Romanova) fight against the diabolical Genom Corporation and its artificial creations called boomers. A sci-fi series with plenty of action, drama, and humor, BGC has it all.
DNA²
Masakazu Katsura
A romantic comedy that centers around Junta Momonari, who gets on the verge of vomiting at the sight of every female except Ami Kurimoto in any state of undress. The ironic twist is that Karin Aoi is sent from the future to prevent Junta from becoming a population-disrupting "mega-playboy."
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World
Hiroki Hayashi
A fantasy series rife with action, comedy, and romance, El-Hazard details the adventures of Makoto Mizuhara, Nanami Jinnai, and Fujisawa-sensei in this magnificent world. They meet many strange characters along the way, including the Bugrom with Nanami's brother Katsuhiko as their general.
The Vision of Escaflowne
Shoji Kawamori
A fascinating fantasy series that follows Hitomi Kanzaki as she becomes entangled with the fate of the mysterious world of Gaea. The pendant that she wears, a present from her grandmother, is innately linked to Van Fanel's Escaflowne, and together they join in the fight against the Zaibach Empire.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gainax
Set 15 years after the Second Impact of 2000, the special agency known as Nerv employs Evangelion units to safeguard Earth against mysterious beings called Angels. Among the 14-year-old pilots of the Eva units is Shinji Ikari, who must also deal with his own personal doubts and fears.
Five Star Stories
Mamoru Nagano
A manga epic that spawned one movie, FSS deals with the adventures of Amaterasu IV (aka Ladious Sopp) and Lachesis. It is set in a faraway star system called the Joker Cluster, where technology is highly advanced and the elite weapons of war are huge mecha called Mortar Headds.
Fushigi Yuugi
Yuu Watase
When Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo find an ancient Chinese text in an isolated room of the National Library, their lives are forever changed. With the help of the book's magical powers, they are teleported to ancient China, where Miaka is heralded as the savior of the troubled Konan Country.
Koko wa Greenwood
Yukie Nasu
A comedy series revolving around the lives of Kazuya Hasukawa and the other strange inhabitants of Greenwood, a male high school dorm. From weird family situations to parodies to romances, Greenwood effectively uses a wide variety of comedic themes that make it very well-loved.
Kimagure Orange Road
Izumi Matsumoto
A romantic comedy with the classic love triangle - Kyousuke Kasuga can't decide which girl he likes better: Madoka Ayukawa or Hikaru Hiyama, who happen to be best friends. Deep down, he loves Madoka, but he is afraid to say so for fear of getting rejected by her and of hurting Hikaru's feelings.
Maison Ikkoku
Rumiko Takahashi
A wonderful romantic comedy centering around Yuhsaku Godai and the beautiful manager of his apartment, Kyoko Otonashi. Add in Shun Mitaka (Kyoko's tennis coach and Godai's rival) and Godai's wacky neighbors at Ikkoku-kan, it is no wonder MI is one of the most beloved anime series.
Marmalade Boy
Wataru Yoshizumi
A soap-operaish romantic comedy revolving around Miki Koishikawa and Yuu Matsuura. One day, Miki's and Yuu's parents decide to get divorces and switch partners. As if that isn't strange enough, they all decide to live together in one house, and as a result, Miki's life is turned upside down.
Mobile Police Patlabor
Masami Yuuki
To combat the number of crimes and runaways by large mecha called labors, the Metro Police Special Vehicle 2nd Command (SV2) was created. Patlabor, which deals primarily with the members of the 2nd Unit of SV2, puts more emphasis on human interactions than most other mecha series.
Ranma ½
Rumiko Takahashi
A hilarious romantic comedy about Ranma Saotome, who is afflicted with a strange curse - cold water turns him into a girl, and hot water turns him back. He is reluctantly engaged to Akane Tendou, and this combination, along with many other strange characters, make Ranma an anime classic.
Magic Knight Rayearth
CLAMP
When Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji meet atop Tokyo Tower for their class trips, they are summoned to the magical land of Cefiro, where they are heralded as the Magic Knights. A series that uses plenty of super-deformed designs, Rayearth also has a distinct RPG feel.
Tenchi Muyo!
Kajishima Masaki
A comedy series about the upside-down life of Tenchi Masaki after he meets a "demon," 2 Jurai-an princesses, a Galaxy Police officer, the greatest scientist in the universe, and the cutest spaceship alive. Throw in some cool villians and weird technology, Tenchi also has plenty of action.
Urusei Yatsura
Rumiko Takahashi
A romantic comedy with an added twist - Lum, a beautiful alien from the planet Oniboshi, falls in love with Ataru Moroboshi, the most lecherous human in the universe. Certainly not my favorite anime, UY is here because it was created by Rumiko Takahashi, and it has a cool web page.
Video Girl Ai
Masakazu Katsura
An extremely touching romantic comedy about the relationship between Ai Amano and Youta Moteuchi. As a video girl, Ai's sole purpose is to help Youta gain the interest of Moemi Hayakawa, who only likes him as a friend, and who coincidentally has a crush on Takashi Niimai, Youta's best friend.
