Raphael to my front The world of 21st-century Tokyo is plagued by supernatural intrusions into this world by beings called Lucifer Hawkes, or Entities. The normal physics of the shadow world become the unusual magic of this world. A special all-female division of the police called AMP, the Attacked Mystification Police, was created by Rally Cheyenne to thwart the activities of the Lucifer Hawkes. Any time paranormal matters enter the scene, AMP immediately has jurisdiction, much to the consternation of the (male) regular police. Silent Möbius began as a comic series by Asamiya Kia, who also did Gunhed, Funpaira, and Dark Angel. There are two anime movies for Silent Möbius; the first being shown tonight. It's rather confusing without some background from the comics (translated at one time by Viz), which this article hopes to adequately provide. CJAS trivia! The first Silent Möbius movie was last shown at CJAS on November 12, 1994. In order of introduction, the characters: Kiddy Phenil. Before joining AMP, green-haired Kiddy was a detective with the special investigations squad. A rampant Megadyne*, serial number 2035618, nicknamed "Wire", wielding a monofilament** whip, annihilated her colleagues and injured her severely, requiring most of her body to be replaced with bionics. Shortly afterwards, Kiddy joined AMP. Kiddy has super strength due to her bionics, and she brandishes a Graviton, a gun used against Lucifer Hawkes. Voice by Tsuru Hiromi (Ayukawa!). *An artificial humanoid superior in strength, used for labor and combat. Has an "expiration date," like Bladerunner Replicants. **A whip one molecule thick that can fit between molecules and slice rather cleanly... Lebia Maverick. Subchief Lebia aides Chief Rally Cheyenne and is a Visionaire, a special kind of person who can interface to computer "logic space" via link systems to a virtual world, analogous to our "real space." She has a satellite in orbit which serves as her data storage, enabling her to store 3000 times the normal capacity of normal visionaires. Lebia serves as the computer specialist for AMP. Lebia has created three constructs to serve her, a Spinner* named Huey, a monolith-shaped optical computer named Louey, and a robot named Duey. Voice by Takashima Gara. *A two-seater vehicle with three wheels used by AMP for transportation. Nami Yamigumo. One of the daughters of the House of Yamigumo, Nami was able to unlock the powers of the Kirin dagger, the sign of succession*. As preparation to train her for the test to succeed Yamigumo, she was placed with AMP to develop her abilities. As a Shinto priestess, Nami sets up ofuda wards and prepares spirit traps for AMP. She's the only AMP member who does not wear the typical uniform on all occasions. Scurrying and crawling things freak her out. Voice by Honda Chieko. *Successors to the House of Yamigumo must undergo an arduous test to determine their fitness. Nami's elder sister, Nana, attempted before her and failed. Yuki Saiko. The youngest member of AMP, Yuki was part of a government project to implant genes into orphaned babies to develop esper weapons. Yuki runs a coffee shop, but all she serves is coffee -- no cakes or other edibles. She wants nothing more than to grow up quickly because she feels that she can't contribute adequately to AMP, compared to the abilities of her older colleagues. Voice by Okamoto Maya. Katsumi Liquer. The daughter of the magician Gigelf Liquer, Katsumi's ancestry was hidden from her by her widowed mother to avoid attracting the attention of the Lucifer Hawkes. However, the blood that flows through Katsumi is the blood of Gigelf Liquer, a hated foe of the Entities, and there was no denying that heritage. Reluctantly, Katsumi has no choice but to join AMP's battle. Katsumi wields the giant sword Grosspolina, which was freed from a monument in which it was imprisoned by Entities two decades ago. She made a contract of blood, the same blood of the clan that imprisoned Grosspolina, with it, which bound her to the sword, making it an extension of herself such that its weight is irrelevant to her. Voice by Matsui Naoko. Rally Cheyenne. Three decades ago, the Entities plotted to cross over from the shadow world by leaving behind human-entity hybrids, who would have the powers of the other world but the permanency of form of an inhabitant of this world. Of this union were two sisters, Rosa and Rally. They discovered their powers at a young age and were shunned as the "Devil's Children." Rosa, the elder of the two, sick of the maltreatment, turned against humanity and went to the side of the Lucifer Hawkes, while Rally, who couldn't help feeling compassion for the human side of her, devoted herself to protecting humans from the ravages of rampant Entity intrusions into the world. She founded AMP, the Attacked Mystification Police, to thwart Entity activities. The Lucifer Hawkes are really steamed that their plan backfired so badly... Voice by Fujita Toshiko. |
