One of Osamu "God of Manga" Tezuka's legendary works, Black Jack, is about an infamous surgeon with God-like skills but practices without a license. He'll perform any surgery if you're willing to pay a hefty sum for his services. The Black Jack movie is set two years after the Olympics. Several records were shattered at these Olympics. The athletes reached levels that were thought to be beyond the limits of the human body. These people were labeled as Super-Humans and seen as the next level of human evolution. Now, there is estimated to be over 1,200 Super-Humans in the world. Something terribly wrong is happening in them. Their inner organs are aging at a pace much faster than they should age. A mysterious woman has contacted Black Jack to have him work at a special hospital for the Super-Humans in an effort to treat this unusual aging effect. Once again, it's up to Black Jack to test his medical skills and save these people from their dangerous gifts. There are a total of six OAVs that were made for Black Jack, and they are available domestically from Manga Entertainment. Black Jack manga is currently available from Viz Comics. There are two graphic novels available. Unfortunately, Viz has discontinued Black Jack manga, so these are the only two translated volumes. There are 22 volumes of untranslated Black Jack available. Tezuka's character designs may be old-fashioned, but the content is superb. Other works by Osamu Tezuka include Adolf, Jungle Emperor Leo (a.k.a. Kimba the White Lion), Astroboy, and Ribbon Knight. |
