A hunter of cities? No. It's a name for a man; a name that all women dream of; a name that all women crave for, or at least he wished it were so. Ryo Saeba, a.k.a. City Hunter, is a character us guys should follow. He's honest, caring, and sensitive to women -- a model of manhood. Yes, I'm still talking about Ryo. And, yes, I know he has some bad habits, but those are inconsequential compared to his awe-inspiring presence. OK, so he's a pervert, and yeah, he's also a glutton, but so what? His "equipment" can lift 100 kg when inspired, can break through walls, push down doors, and crack bullet-proof glass. However, like I said, all this is secondary compared to his real character. Never one to turn his back on the helpless and weak, he constantly shows his true and bright colors when facing a tough assignment (and they are all tough) or just helping out a friend. Mentioned by almost all his clients, Ryo seems like two different people -- the fool, acting like a lecherous idiot, chasing after anyone with a skirt, and the professional, coolly and handsomely defeating anything that proves to be a nuisance. Yet, what his clients don't know is that the foolish act is deliberate. It is a tool to put her (almost always a her) at ease, so she would forget that her life is in danger. This way, she would worry about something more important than her imagined threats -- how to protect her chastity from Ryo, a most real and immediate threat. Ryo also has a partner named Kaori Makimura, also known as the only female who can't excite Ryo to "raise his flag." She's the sister of his former partner who died when Ryo wasn't there to help him out and, therefore, was killed by a drug-induced manic. Don't worry, Ryo took revenge... blew the guy's brains out, hahahaha. Sorry, I enjoyed writing this article too much. Anyway, before his partner died, he asked Ryo to raise his sister and never, ever try to seduce her. And that, my friends, is the tragic yet true story of how Kaori cannot excite Ryo. She is forever denied (not really, just seems that way to her) the satisfaction of getting a reaction from Ryo. She can only, sadly and angrily, sit in the sidelines and watch as woman after woman affect Ryo's "plumbing." Yes, if you can't tell from reading this, Kaori is in love with Ryo (but so is every other female) and, unfortunately, Ryo is also in love with Kaori. However, Ryo's word to Kaori's brother binds him. City Hunter the TV series is based on Hojo Tsukasa's manga. Compared to the manga, the TV series is quite tame and not as satisfying. No "raising the flag" and such. Yet, it's still very well done, which inspired me to buy all 35 volumes of the manga. If you wish to read City Hunter in all his glory, come to Manga Club on Tuesdays, and I'll bring some. By the way, the word "mokkori" is supposedly the sound that Ryo's "equipment" makes when he becomes excited. And, on that final note, enjoy tonight's showing. |
