If you were here for last semester's marathon, you might have caught the Slayers movie. Well... surprise!!! We're bringing you the Slayers TV series! Didn't see the movie, you say? Well, here's a brief introduction for the series and some of the characters that you'll be seeing. The series revolves around our hero, Lina Inverse. She's an insanely powerful sorceress and wielder of the even more insanely powerful Dragon Slave magic. Lina also is an ego-maniac. She thinks that every handsome man is undeniably in love with her. Lina is known all over the land as a bandit-killer... and for being flat-chested. She has an appetite that can be matched by no one. Traveling with Lina is Gourry, the wielder of the legendary Sword of Light. This incredibly thick-skulled warrior has Lina tagging along 'cause she wants his Sword of Light. Although he is incredibly dense, he's not stupid enough to give away the Sword of Light to Lina. Like Lina, he also enjoys a good meal, but he doesn't eat nearly as much as she does. Slayers is a delightful series because of the way the characters are designed. First off, Lina is modeled much like the teenage girl that she should be. Her dialogue and interaction with the other characters is what I look forward to in the series. Her side comments are the funniest that I've ever seen in an anime series. The story is all right; it's your typical good versus evil idea. The story is made more interesting when you throw in ludicrous characters. Remember the frog demon from the movie we showed? In the TV series, you'll encounter fishmen, mummy-wizards, insanely powerful gods, and other neat characters. To sum up, Slayers is a series that you don't want to miss. The characters are funny, and (for a shameless promotion) the soundtrack is one of the best that I've ever listened to. Enjoy the show and buy the soundtrack. [Editor's note: The various Slayers movies/OAVs are based on short stories that were serialized in Dragon Magazine as Slayers Special. They follow a different timeline than the various 26-episode Slayers TV series, which are based on novels, under the title Slayers, by the same author (Hajime Kanzaka). In the movies/OAVs, the main characters are Lina and Naga, while in the TV series, Lina and Gourry are later joined by Zelgadis and Amelia as principal characters. There are currently 3 movies (Slayers, Slayers Return, and Slayers Great), 3 OAVs, and 3 TV series (Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try). In addition, there are 2 radio drama series, Slayers EX. (Extra) and Slayers N>EX (Nextra), which follow the first two TV series, respectively.] |
