My Travel in Myanmar (Pictures from 2002-01-4 to 2002-02-07)

The city of Mandalay was the capital of Burma prior to the British invasion and as such still holds some of the best cultural treasures of the Burmanese culture.  In fact, it has one of the best preserved fort city that I have come across so far.

Night Train to Mandalay

Definitely not one of the most comfortable trains I have taken but it beats taking a bus any day as the roads are impossible...

Stops Along the Way

The train stopped at many small, name-less station along the way and would immediately be mob by children who are asking for empty plastic bottles, which they can then sell

Water Jogs

You see these water jogs everywhere but I am not sure how safe it is to drink out of them

Lack of Public Utility

Running water and electricity are in short supply. Most people still rely on wells for their water needs...

The "Resotred" Royal Palace

While it looks nice from afar, there really is nothing inside and someone who build mock scenary sets for movies must have done the "restoration" work ...

Local Food

There aren't many restaurants for a city of this size but you manage to find some jewels here and there

Marble Carving

Mandalay has a large marble mine nearby and exports a large amount of marble to China

Beautiful Tapestry

The workmanship is incrediable and the price is excellent. I bought two very large wall pieces for $140 without any real bargaining.

Schools

Apparently the governement believes stupid people are easier to control, they make minimal effort when it comes to education. So, many elementry schools are nothing more than just a one large room where each grade level takes up a corner...

U Bend Bridge

a beautiful wooden bridge built prior to the British invasion

Public Bath

Since most homes don't have running water, their shower facility is shared...

Friends of Mine

While exploring Mandalay, I met a wonderful kid who is studying to become a tourist guide. He and his mother invited me over for a coup of delicious tea. Thank you!!
