My Travel in Nepal (Pictures from 2002-04-24 to 2002-04-29)

After taking a well deserved rest and having gotten myself out of the hospital, I decided to do some whitewater rafting in Pokara.  After I got there, however, the Maoist rebels declared a 5 day strike and virtually shut down the country.   The only way for me to get back to Kathmandu was to kayak down Trisuli river for about 4 to 5 days and then take a bus from there.  Thus began another adventure...

Beating the Strike Deadline

Just before the strike is about to start, every one rushes to try to get to where they need to go

My Guide and His Family

Laxmon is an excellent guide! He and the company he works for, Lotus Adventure in Pokara, are both highly recommended.

While the Adults Fight...

The kids play as no cars dare run the Maoist blockade

Villages Along the Way

Each night we stayed in villages along the river and enjoyed the villager's hospitality.

Kayaking ... Almost

After numerous tries, I still have trouble turning over once I flipped but at least I can now handle anything up to a Class III+ rapaids.

Kayaking...

While kayaking down the river, we often come acorss fightings between government forces and Maoists rebels. Luckily, no one shot at us, at least seriously.

The Family I Love

Nanu and her family are amazing! Thank you all for your wonderful hospitality.

During a Rain Storm

What can we do but wait out the storm?

Waiting Out the Storm

Rubina takes shelter from the storm...

But It Got Worse

At first we thought the storm would pass in a few minutes but we soon realized that's not the case and everyone took refugee in the only concrete building in the village.

The Aftermath

After the storm finally passed, everyone went about picking up the pieces and start to rebuild their now ruined homes

Maoist Road Blocks

Along the roadway, Maoists would chop down trees to slow down cars and then hit them with machine guns and RPGs.

After an Attack

Here are some unlucky vehilces that got caught in an attack

After an Attack

Maoists would not only attack any vehicles attempting to run their blockade, they also attacked government buildings, often at night.

After an Attack

Even buses are not immune from attacks

Government Conveys

Governement would send out armed conveys to challenge Maoists rebels. We followed one convey for a while until it too came under fire.

After 4 days of kayaking and one day on the back of a truck following an armed government convey, I finally arrived in Katmandu.  I do not understand the conflict completely but I do hope that a just peace would one day return to this beautiful land and people can smile happily once again.
