The 28-sq-km Pulau Penang is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia,
predating both Singapore and Melaca. With its colorful, historically
intriguing capital of Georgetown, Penang calls out to all visitors to the
region. Surprisingly, this is also the birth place of modern China -
Dr. Sun Yatsen planned the 1911 Canton uprising that eventually overthrown
the old Qing Dynasty and established the Republic of China.

Between 1808 and 1810, the fort was converted from wood to to, but only the timeworn outer walls and a few cannons remain. |

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
This magnificent Hakka merchant's mansion sits on an ideal feng shui and was once the home of one of the most powerful merchants in recent Chinese history. Today, it is a museum as well as a bed and breakfast inn. |
